No matter how hard I work, I will most likely remain where I am. The system is not a meritocracy, and the higher positions are reserved for the beautiful people and their children. I am not beautiful, so no doors will be opened for me, I will not get second chances, and my perfectly justifiable frustrations at being condemned to drudgery will be seen as insolence and insubordination. Therefore, unlike the beautiful, my desire to better myself will not be seen as ambition but as a dire threat. And unlike them, my dreams will not be seen as endearing and a sign of "inner motivation" but out of place and kind of sad.
